Hi there,
Jesse here, from Jesse’s Tech Solutions. We often forget that the smartphone in our pocket is a powerful computer, holding everything from our family photos and private messages to our banking information. Protecting it is just as important as locking the front door to your house. Here’s a simple guide to keeping your mobile phone secure.
1. Use a Strong Passcode and Biometrics:
A simple 4-digit PIN is better than nothing, but a longer passcode (6 digits or an alphanumeric password) is much more secure. Better yet, enable Face ID or Fingerprint ID if your phone supports it. It’s a quick and highly secure way to ensure only you can unlock your device.
2. Beware of Suspicious Messages (Smishing):
Scammers are getting clever. They send text messages that look like they’re from your bank, the post office, or even a government agency, often with a link to click. A good rule of thumb: if a message seems urgent and asks you to click a link to “verify your account” or “track a package you didn’t order,” be suspicious. Never enter personal or financial details via a link in a text message.
3. Only Use Official App Stores:
Always download your apps from the official sources: the Apple App Store for iPhones and the Google Play Store for Android phones. Apps from these stores are vetted for security. Downloading from unofficial websites can put your device at risk of malware.
4. Keep Your Operating System Updated:
Just like on your computer, those software update notifications on your phone are vital. They contain the latest security fixes to protect you from newly discovered threats. Go to your phone’s settings and check for updates regularly.
5. Check App Permissions:
When you install a new app, it might ask for permission to access your contacts, camera, or location. Think about whether the app really needs that access. A simple game probably doesn’t need to see your contact list. You can review and change these permissions in your phone’s settings at any time.
Technology should make life easier, not scarier. If you feel overwhelmed or want someone to sit down with you and go through your phone’s security settings, please reach out. I offer one-on-one training to help you use your technology safely and confidently.
Stay safe,
Jesse
